2012 Australian Centurions Walk, 14-15 April 2012

THE 2012 AUSTRALIAN CENTURIONS QUALIFYING WALK HAS BEEN HELD. STAY TUNED FOR AN ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING OUR 2013 QUALIFYING EVENT.

The next Australian Centurions 24 Hour Walk will be held in conjunction with the Coburg 24 Hour Carnival. The carnival is spaced over two weekends with 6 Hour walk/run events being held on Sunday 11 March and the 24 Hour walk/run events 14-15 April 2012.

Both the 6 Hour walk and the 24 Hour walk are held on a 400m athletics track in Coburg, a suburb of Melbourne. As this is a very popular carnival, potential entrants are advised to enter early.

The 24 Hour Walk event includes Racewalking Australia 100 km Walk Championships for men and women. These additional championships are run under the auspices of the Australian Federation of Race Walking Clubs. The walks are judged according to Centurion rules rather than the stricter racewalking rules.

How do I enter the 100 km Australian Walk Championship?
Any competitors who enter the 24 Hour Walk event are automatically entered in the 100 km Australian Walk Championship at no additional cost.

Three awards are on offer

  • GOLD MEDAL - The ultimate aim is to walk 100 Miles within 24 hours and earn the highly sought Australian Centurion badge and full life membership of the Australian Centurions. This is what we call the Gold Medal performance.
  • SILVER MEDAL - The Centurion silver medal is awarded to any walker who either completes 80 km or walks for at least 12 hours.
  • BRONZE MEDAL - The Centurion bronze medal is awarded to any walker who either completes 40 km or walks for at least 6 hours.

While our event has Public Liability Insurance, we do not offer anything in the way of Personal Accident Insurance. In the event that you suffer an injury during our event and subsequently incur either medical expenses or  time off work, it comes out of your pocket. We therefore recommend that competitors take out their own precautions in this matter by means of Private Health Insurance, Ambulance Victoria membership and/or their own Sports Insurance.

AURA used to offer Personal Accident Insurance as part of its membership package but that is not the case at the moment. However, I still recommend AURA membership to any Australian competitors who regularly compete in these ultra events and I refer you to their website at http://www.aura.asn.au

I must also alert you to a second matter of importance, given the possibility of hot weather, especially on the day of the 6 Hour event. With this in mind, we have formulated the following statement of intent

If the forecast is for extremely hot weather on the day of the race, we reserve the right to postpone the event to either later in the day or to a different day. As per the guidelines issued by Sports Medicine Australia, we regard extreme conditions as conditions where the forecast temperature is expected to be 35 C or higher. Such a decision would normally be made on the morning of the race. For further reading on this matter, you are referred to Hot Weather Guidelines

This is just a hands up in case the worst happens and is an indication of the fact that ultra race organisers will increasingly have to factor such a 'duty of care' into their race plans. Note that we have never had to implement this crisis plan.
